Pre-school children Essay Example for Free

Pre-school children Essay I carried out my observation on a group of pre-school children consisting 1 boy and 2 girls for 13 minutes in the morning free play session. These children were about to do leaf and twig printing for the first time. The equipment that was provided was yellow paint, brown paint and green paint all of these were in small paint trays. There was also sugar paper for the children to print their leaves on. There was also various sized leafs and twigs in a small tray. Each child went and put their aprons on. Then they came and sat sown around the table on the chairs. I explained to them what they have to do and I demonstrated this by dabbing a leaf into the paint and printing it onto a piece of sugar paper. Then I got a piece of twig and dabbed it into the paint and printed it onto the sugar paper. The children listened to me carefully and then they started to their printing. A picked a large leaf using her right and looked at it, and then she said wow, look at how many colours this leaf has, 1, 2, 3 different colours. Next she carefully lifted another large leaf she dabbed it into the green painted. Next she printed the leaf onto the large piece sugar paper. R picked up a twig and he stroked it into the brown paint; next he stroked the twig onto the piece of sugar paper and whilst he was doing this he said this paint is going in lines, it looks like chocolate, weeeeehhh. Beside this K picked up a leaf and dabbed it into the yellow paint. K rubbed the leaf into the yellow paint, next he lifted the leaf from the yellow paint and placed the leaf in the green paint, and again he rubbed the leaf and said while doing this he excitedly said I am mixing colours. Next I asked the children where do leaves come from? A quickly answered they come from trees. R added then they fall off the trees. K also added twigs come from trees as well. K said Look, I made a nice picture, she also added I have got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 leaves printed. Soon after R picked up a leaf and said loudly this leaf is red, yellow and brown. A picked up a twig and using both of her hands she rolled it into the green paint, she next rolled the twig onto the sugar paper. A picked up 3 different sized leaves and placed them onto the sugar paper and said this one is tiny, this one is a little bit bigger and this one is the biggest. R then said excitedly look my twig has made patterns. A leaned over to have look at Rs picture. A said it hassss! . Then she looked at her picture and said look! My leaves have made patterns in the middle. Next K held up her paper and said I am finished! . She placed her paper on the drying rack and took her apron off, washed her hands and went to play with some toys. R and A also said that they had finished they placed their pieces of paper onto the drying rack. Next they removed their aprons and washed their hands and went to play. E6 E7 E10 I carried out my observation on a group of morning children of the pre-school for a total of 13 minutes approximately whilst they had a free play. I observed how a group of children play with natural materials and noting how it helps them to learn. While I was observing this small group of children playing I noticed that this activity helps them to learn about the knowledge and understanding of the world. I also noticed that they were interacting and communicating really well with each other. You can view this by reading my observation in E5. But we must remember that each child develops at their own pace. This group of childrens ages range from 3:6 years to 3: 9 years. The Foundation Stage Curriculum states Knowledge and Understanding of The World; children notice and comment on patterns (2000, pg89). This statement was from the green area stepping stone and this shows me that this group of children are at the correct developmental stage. But we must remember that each child is an individual. Also The Foundation Stage Curriculum states Mathematical Development; children count actions and objects that cannot be moved (2000, pg 75). This statement from The Foundation Stage Curriculum is from the green area stepping stone, and it shows me that K is at the correct developmental stage because you can see from my observation in E5 that K was counting the leaf printings on her piece of sugar paper. The Foundation Stage Curriculum also states Mathematical Development; children use size language such as big and little. This statement shows me that R is at the correct developmental stage because he was using size language when he was describing the three leaves. You can see this by viewing my observation in E5.

CREATINE Athletes will put many different types of supplements and drugs to increase their physical strength. These supplements range from protein shakes to steroids. Some sports supplements are incredibly safe and effective, while others still work well but do more damage than good in the long run. In the past athletes had to turn to such things as anabolic steroids or blood doping (the process of taking out blood and adding oxygen to it and putting it back into their body in order to increase their endurance). But they are illegal. Many supplements are as simple as packaged energy and others require a strict exercise and eating regimen. I will explore creatine and it's effect on the sport world.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Creatine was first introduced to the US in 1993 by a supplement company called Experimental and Applied Sciences. Since then it has become one of the most demanded items on the market. The creatine that is bought in stores duplicates the natural creatine that is produced by the kidney, liver, and pancreas. Creatine Monohydrate has been proven to significantly enhance athletic performance in the areas of power, strength, and muscle mass. Most importantly though, it doesn't seem to have any serious side effects. Also, since Creatine is found naturally in the body and in foods, it is likely that it will not be removed from sports.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Creatine is a nutrient that is found in many foods. It is most highly concentrated in lean red meat. A half-pound of red meat contains about two grams of Creatine. Every human body also produces Creatine in very small amounts, though some people produce more than others. Creatine is necessary for proper cell functions and cell reproduction, it is also a primary storage for energy in muscles.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Creatine works when somebody is exercising, his or her muscles demand energy. The energy that the muscle gets is called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). As the muscles keep contracting, the ATP is turned into adenosine diphosphate (ADP). ADP causes your muscles to fatigue. Creatine Phosphate helps to convert ADP into ATP when the ATP is gone. In doing this, the athlete has better endurance during his of her workout or event.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  If all this were true, it would be easy to see why athletes are turning to Creatine for an edge on their competition. But are these claims real? Is their scientific proof of what Creatine does?

Dropout of school Essay

The Huffington Post recently ran an article entitled, â€Å"America’s School Dropout Epidemic By The Numbers† about America’s dropout problem. I would like to add my opinions about why children drop out of school. I am a professional educator who served as a classroom teacher, school counselor and school administrator in the New York City school system for over 33 years. I believe that there are five major reasons why children leave school: 1. The students themselves They make wrong decisions. They get involved with gangs, drugs/alcohol, get pregnant and commit crimes. Many have a poor school attitude and are frequently bored by school. They are disconnected to their families, school and life. They do not see the reasons they need to go to school. They are not involved in school activities and lack self-esteem. Some have been promoted lacking skills needed for promotion. Some have undergone major illnesses and have missed too many days of school and have been informed that they will be held back. Because of many of the conditions listed above, they have been suspended and have fallen behind in their work and see little purpose of returning to school. 2. The family they come from There is often a clash between the family values and those of the school. Frequently, their parents have dropped out of school themselves. The students come from families from low socio-economic backgrounds, where there are many other children. Older children often have to go to work in order to supply the family with much-needed funds for basic family needs or need to stay home to take care of younger siblings so that their parents can work. Many children come from non-English speaking homes with high mobility. Single parent homes have become the norm in the United States. Many children are products of divorce, separation or, sometimes, family violence. hey are not being raised by parents, but rather by aunts, uncles and grandparents. Families are not meeting some children’s basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. 3. The community they come from Many children live on the wrong side of the tracks in places where education is not valued, where drugs, gangs and violence abound. And where schools are low-performing, they often lack community and health support. 4. The schools they attend The schools are toxic to student learning, students, parents and staff. Students are suspended for minor infractions (such as â€Å"talking back to the teacher†), or placed in â€Å"remedial classes. † The schools have a culture of low expectations. They lack adequate guidance counseling. The curriculum is not relevant to the needs of the students being taught. Passive instructional strategies are being used without regard to individual student learning styles. Teachers are not trained in the latest teaching/learning/technology techniques. Funding is based on property values so that low-income neighborhoods receive less funding than wealthy neighborhoods. Because some states pass budgets in a less than timely matter, teachers are not hired in time producing over-sized classrooms. 5. The teachers they have The least-experienced, least classroom-trained teachers are often assigned to the most difficult schools. They enter the field with the expectation that they have been adequately prepared by the schools of education with the skills they need and they haven’t received. (See Arthur Levine, â€Å"Educating School Teachers†) They are leaving the field faster than colleges can prepare them. The teacher â€Å"dropout rate† is higher than the student dropout rate. Forty-six percent of teachers leave the field within five years. When asked why they leave, a majority state that they haven’t been properly prepared, have had increased demands placed on them because of high stakes testing and are not getting adequate support from their supervisors in dealing with classroom discipline. Like all generalities, there are exceptions to the information provided above. But, by and large, the statistics bear them out.

Theodore Roosevelt was the second of his parents four children. His mother, Martha Mittie Roosevelt, was a southerner who had been raised on a plantation in Georgia. Looking back on what he learned and achieved during his time at Harvard, Roosevelt felt that he had gained nothing. He was depre ssed from the treatment, and the rigidity; Roosevelt thought he learned too many useless things that he would never use in his life. After Roosevelt Sr.s death, he inherited $125,000. Back then, this was by far enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life. He later gave up on a plan he made earlier to study natural science and instead decided to attend Columbia Law School. Roosevelts studying at Columbia involved just him writing a book about the war of 1812 as he was not enjoying law. Determined to enter politics, he became a New York State Assemblyman in 1882, 1883, and 1884. Immediately, Roosevelt began fighting corruption; Roosevelts anti-corruption attempts, played a major role in him winning re-election in 1882 by nearly doubling the runner ups score. On July 2, 1881, after only four months in office, James A. Garfield was shot twice in a railroad station by Charles J. Guiteau. Roosevelt won the election as the Republican Party leader in the state assembly. Right after allying with Governor Cleveland to win the passage of a civil service reform bill, Roosevelt won re-election a second time, and tried to become the Speaker of the House, but was defeated by Titus Sheard in a 41 to 29 vote by the GOP caucus. Before becoming President, Roosevelt was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He resigned in 1898 to organize the Rough Riders, a cavalry unit for the United States of America, which fought in the Spanish American War. The original plan for recruiting men to join the Rough Riders called for people within the Indian territory, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma. However, once Roosevelt joined, the group became a mix of troops from Ivy League athletes, to bartenders from California. Roosevelt and Colonel Leonard Wood trained and cared for their troops so well that the Rough Riders were allowed to fight unlike most other volunteer groups. At the end of May,, they went to Tampa and set sail for Santiago de Cuba on June 13th, where they joined the Fifth Corps, another highly trained and enthusiastic group made up of excellent soldiers, a mixture of volunteers and the regular army. The Rough Riders first battle was at Las Guà ¡simas when General Samuel B.M. Young was ordered to attack a village three miles north of Siboney on the way to Santiago. The battle was not significant in the Spanish American war, but still managed to quickly make headlines in leading newspapers. They also gained fame for their role in the Battle of San Juan Hill. Coming back from the Spanish American War, the Rough Riders were moved to a camp at Montauk Point, Long Island. Roosevelt and his men were briefly quarantined due to the fear of Yellow Fever, a viral disease with symptoms that include fever, chills, loss of appetite, nausea, muscle pains in the back, and headaches. Shortly after Roosevelt returned to the United States, Republican Congr essman Lemuel E. Quigg, asked Roosevelt to run in the 1898 Gubernatorial Election of New York. Platt, the party boss, disliked Roosevelt on a personal level, but needed a strong candidate due to the unpopularity of the Republican governor, Frank, S. Black. Roosevelt then agreed to become their nominee and try not to make war with the Republicans while in office. Roosevelt defeated Black in the Republican caucus by a vote of 753 against 218 and faced Democrat, Augustus Van Wyck, who was a well-respected judge in the general election. On November 1899, Garret Hobart, current Vice President, died due to a tragic heart failure, leaving an open spot on the 1900 republican national ticket. Despite Henry Cabot Lodge and many others encouraged him to run for Vice President in 1900, Roosevelt was reluctant to take the position as it was powerless and later issued a public statement saying he would not accept the nomination. Plus, Roosevelt was informed by President McKinley and current campaign manager, Mark Hanna, that he would not be considered for the role of vice president due to his actions prior to the Spanishâ€Å"American War. On September 6 1901, William McKinley was shot in the Pan American Exposition at the temple of music in Buffalo, New York. McKinley was greeting the public when Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist from Alpena Michigan, shot him twice in the abdomen. Eight days later McKinley passed away. Roosevelt had only been Vice President for 194 days before taking the position of presidency. Being a Republica n, Roosevelt won a full four year term as presidency in 1904 beating out Alton B. Parker by more than two to one. The 1904 election was actually the first ever election where the Socialist Party participated under Eugene V. Debs who got 2.8% of the votes. Roosevelt negotiated the Russo-Japanese peace treaty also known as the Portsmouth treaty. It formally ended the Russo-Japanese war after being signed on September 5, 1905. The war is a military conflict where the victorious Japan forced Russia to abandon its expansionist policy in Asia, also becoming the first Asian power in modern days to defeat a European power. Two years later, Roosevelt is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for peacefully mediating the Russo-Japanese War treaty. He also established numerous monuments and national parks including the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota which exhibits bison, deer, and elk who roam freely throughout the park. In March, 1909, Roosevelts presidency ends. Roosevelt goes and enjoys himself in Africa on a hunting trip, he publishes several books and gives many public speeches across the nation. In February 1912, 3 years after Roosevelt finished his presidency, he is nominated as the presidential candidate for the Progressive party. On October 14th, Roosevelt was shot in his chest while he was giving his presidential speech. Although the wounds were minor, Roosevelt still managed to finish his speech. On November 5th, despite receiving the greatest number of votes for a third-party candidate, Roosevelt lost the presidential election to Woodrow Wilson. From February to April 1914, Roosevelt embarks on an expedition to explore an uncharted tributary of the beautiful Amazon River. Roosevelt sustains a severe leg injury during his expedition and is not expected to survive. Despite these odds, Roosevelt manages to make it safely back on May 5th. In the year 1917, four of Roosevelts sons enlist in the military and his daughter Ethel, serves as a Red Cross nurse. On July 14th, Roosevelts youngest son, Quentin, is killed in action while serving as a fighter pilot in France. One year later, on January 6th, Roosevelt dies in his sleep at Sagamore Hill of a coronary embolism which is when your artery clots up preventing blood flow from the heart. Roosevelt was 60 years old when he died; Roosevelt is remembered as one of our nations great presidents and a national symbol for justice.
